I have spent the month of may working with teachers and schools in Saltcoats, Churchbridge and Esterhazy where students from kindergarten to grade 8 have participated in nature-orientated activities such as pond-dipping, nature hikes, classroom presentations about local birds and plants and exploring nature through art. It has been a fun and interesting learning experience for both the students and I. They are very enthusiastic and curious and I was very surprised to find how knowledgeable several of the students are about the local flora and fauna.

Week of May 3 - 7

I arrived in Saltcoats at the home of Walter and Joan Farquharson on Sunday May 2nd. A BBQ/potluck hosted by Ron and Geri Knudsen on Wednesday gave me the opportunity to meet the members of the YFBTA.
On Friday, I spent the morning with Todd and Brandon -- the film crew with Sasktel Max at the Bradford Farm. They were interested in filming the birds and interviewing us about the YFBTA and birding in the area. The birds co-operated with us very well and they got some shots of sandpipers, blackbirds, shovelers and a flock of yellow-rumped warblers. The program will air on Thursday May 13 on Sasktel Max (channel 48) on the Max Magazine episode "Up in the Air".

Introduction

Hi, I am Nancy Kennedy, the summer student with the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association. I am very pleased to join your community to help deliver ecology-centered educational programs to young people throughout the summer. I am looking forward to discovering and exploring the area surrounding the communities of Saltcoats, Churchbridge and Esterhazy and I hope I can make a positive contribution towards the summer program.
